What is Nylon Insert Locknut |
Nylon insert locknut, polymer insert lock nut or elastic stop nut (although incorrectly, as an elastic stop nut is broad class of locking nuts), is a kind of nut that includes a nylon collar insert. The insert is placed at the end of the nut and its inner diameter (ID) is slightly smaller than the major diameter of the screw. The insert deforms elastically over the threads of the screw, but threads are not cut into the nylon. The nylon insert locks the nut in two ways. First, it forces the bottom face of the screw threads against the top face of the nut threads, increasing the friction between the two. Second, the nylon applies a compressive force against the screw itself.

How to Use a Nylon Locknut |
Nylon locknuts differ from a standard hex nut in that they have a nylon insert secured within lockthe nut. The nylon insert is located in a tapered section located at the back of the nut. When you install the nylon locknut onto a bolt or threaded stud, the nylon insert wraps around the threads and locks the nut in place. This gives a nylon locknut a distinct advantage over a lock washer when the bolt or threaded stud is subject to vibration, as the nylon locknut is unaffected by vibration.

How to Remove a Stripped Locknut |
Locknuts are commonly used to attach wheel rims to threaded bolt shafts. The nut "locks" because of a nylon insert that lines the center hole of the nut, which allows it to grip or lock onto the threads of the shaft. If the nylon insert becomes stripped, then removing the locknut can be difficult. There are three ways to remove a stripped locknut; try the easiest one before going on to the next technique. If all else fails, you will have to cut the locknut off by hand.
